Hey Y’all! (random title to say the least!)

Can I get a HOOPLA for making it to Friday? (Did anyone watch SpongeBob as much as I did back in the day? Gosh that stuff is good)

For today’s post I am just bringing up a random slew of ramblings that I feel I want to update, inform and tell you all about! It is Friday after all so making a completely cohesive post is just not on the agenda. Plus I have been writing several papers, emails and of course writing for blogging-related stuff and my eye balls hurt from the screen at this point haha. Not that I am not enjoying all of this (well school papers not so much) but yeah, I am glad the weekend is hurrr.

So let’s get to it, in numbered form for organizational purposes! :)

1) I am on Day Four of no intense exercise and so far none of my worst, irrational fears have come true…who woulda thunk huh? Aka I have NOT…

  1. Lost all endurance and muscle tone
  2. Gained weight

I am still not sure how long this break is going to last. At first I gave myself seven full days to take off as I thought that was all I would be able to stand. But honestly, I am not going as crazy as I thought I would, a sincere relief to say the least! What is really encouraging me and keeping me committed to this break, is remembering the fact that I simply do not have a choice in this… well that is if I have any hope in competing this summer in various road races and triathlons (both of which I plan to do!).

Guess what else happened the other day? I went to a yoga class and didn’t want to stab myself during it! Win.

For YEARS I have hated yoga with a burning passion… and I can better understand the “reasoning” behind my attitude now that I am resting properly. Yoga just did not count as a workout for me- not that it was not a challenge, because I know some kinds are quite hard, but more that it was just NOT for me.

A workout that does not get my heart rate pumping above 180, that does not make my muscles burn, and induce sweat like no other? Pshhh don’t think so! Plus anytime I had tried yoga in the past I can remember feeling mentally tortured during it- I was so BORED and could not wait for the class to be over, yet time seemed to be going backwards. And yet when I went to a class on Thursday morning, I found it enjoyable. WHO AM I?! Albeit hard, as I am inflexible as heck, but it felt good.

What I am trying to express and explain is wow, the mind is a powerful thing. I mean duh, could that have been a more obvious and dumb statement? Well it’s crucial here. With a simple shift in my thinking, attitude and thought process toward yoga, I found the class fulfilling and beneficial for both my mind and body… this shift made all the difference.

Remembering this as I continue taking rest will be vital for my success and sanity. Plus, this whole turning your attitude/thinking around has really intrigued me… how else could this benefit in my recovery, in my life?! Countless ways I am sure and I am looking forward to exploring this notion further.

2) I just finished Divergent the other day and LOVED IT!

I cannot remember who recommended this… Lindsay was it you? If you like the Hunger Games (sheese who doesn’t!?) then you will quite thoroughly enjoy this novel.

One choice. One choice decides your friends, defines your beliefs, and determines your loyalties . . . forever. Or, one choice can transform you. In Veronica Roth’s debut novel, Divergent, a perfect society unfolds into a dystopian world of electrifying decisions, stunning consequences, heartbreaking betrayals, and unexpected romance.”

Anyway, it was an excellent choice and I am rather excited for the next one to come out!

3) I cooked and baked A TON when I was home last week and wanted to share a few more of the recipes- plus the one for egg white oatmeal that a few of you requested :)

First up a recipe for coffee cake. I am a coffee cake FANATIC… that was a favorite snack choice FOR SURE when I was younger. The crumb topping was obviously the best part and I definitely favored Entenmanns over any other kind out there, they had the thickest most buttery crumb topping :) Well I have not had coffee cake in years for reasons you can probably guess (oh hey there fear food) but that doesn’t mean I am not going to never have it again. And until then, how about a spruced up healthier version!

Blueberry-Lemon Coffee Cake

(adapted from Cooking Light)

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • **1/3 cup almond paste
  • 2 tablespoons chilled butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1 large egg (could use an egg substitute!)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 3/4 cup milk (I used vanilla soy milk)
  • 1 1/2 cups blueberries (I used frozen)
  • 2 teaspoons grated lemon rind

For the Topping

  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 3 tablespoons sliced almonds, chopped
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

If you do not want to buy/cannot find almond paste, you can make your own! I did…

Almond Paste:

  • 1-1/2 cups blanched almonds
  • 1-1/2 cups confectioners’ sugar
  • 1 egg white
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons almond extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  1. Place almonds in a food processor; cover and process until smooth. Add the confectioners’ sugar, egg white, extract and salt; cover and process until smooth.
  1. Divide almond paste into 1/2-cup portions; place in airtight containers. Refrigerate for up to 1 month or freeze for up to 3 months. Yield: 1-1/2 cups.


  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. Combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a small bowl, stirring with a whisk.
  3. Place 1/2 cup sugar, almond paste, and 2 tablespoons butter in a large bowl; beat with a mixer at medium speed until well blended. Add egg and lemon juice, beating well. Add the flour mixture and milk alternately to the sugar mixture, beginning and ending with the flour mixture.
  4. Fold in the blueberries and rind. Spoon batter into a nine-inch square baking pan coated with cooking spray.
  5. To prepare topping, combine 1/4 cup sugar and remaining ingredients in a small bowl, tossing with a fork until moist. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the batter. Bake at 350°F for 35 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in the pan on a wire rack.

These were fantastic if I do say so myself! The lemon flavor was evident but not overly powerful, the blueberries added a fresh taste, they were not too sweet and the crumb topping (although not Entenmann’s) was taste as well!

Egg White Pumpkin Oatmeal


  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup milk of choice
  • 1/2 cup egg liquid whites
  • 1/3-1/2 cup pumpkin puree (your preference)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (optional)
  • Cinnamon to taste (I use about 1 tablespoon!)


  1. Cook the oats according to package directions. I cook mine for more time to get them thicker, about 10 minutes with occasional stirring.
  2. In the last 2 minutes of cooking quickly stir in the egg whites, being sure to stir vigorously so they get well-distributed and so they do not curdle. Then, stir in the pumpkin purée, vanilla and cinnamon.
  3. Serve and enjoy a rather voluminous, splendid bowl of oats! Oh and top with whatever tickles your fancy… I was feeling blueberries this particular day:

4) Let’s talk Pinterest (click to follow me! Shameless plug there, sorry) for a bit here… first a few funny pins that stuck out and allowed me a chuckle in the last few days-

I cannot even tell you how many times I have heard the above meme spoken by someone here at school…

This happened yesterday as a matter of fact at Barnes and Noble and I almost died from grossness! (yep it’s possible ;) )


One more thing about Pinterest! I stumbled upon this article the other day and could not help but share it:

If you do not feel like clicking over, it’s an article summarizing Pinterest’s efforts to ban those damn Thinspiration and Thinspo pins that are all over the place on the site. However, they also discussed how difficult of a task this is going to be and also the whole going against free speech thing.. something I have discussed on my own blog before.

I would love to hear your thoughts on this (and from the article)…. What do you think? Just another meaningless infringement on free speech, or a progressive step toward making the internet less full of thin women in undies, unhealthy “tips,” and other triggering images?

For me I can see how this can go both ways but as I said when I discussed this a few months ago, for the most part I found them harmful.I know I used to go on Thinspiration sites.. not necessarily to utilize the tips, but I certainly made note of them “just in case.”

5) Game of Thrones Seasons 2 premieres on Sunday!!!!!!!!!! (excessive explanation points are necessary)

To say I am excited with be a massive understatement… gigantic I tell you! I will tell you that I will be out of commission from 9- 10:30 on Sunday night, no one attempt to talk to me :) Oh and even thought the show is only an hour, I will need that extra 30 minutes to process the awesomeness this show is.

6) When I was home this week, I hung out with a good friend of mine Suzanne (who I went to NYC with during December) and she is coming to UMASS this weekend! She is visiting her cousin who is celebrating her 21st (eek) and we will certainly be meeting up.

During break we partook in beach, restaurant and bar festivities together and it was a joyous time.

I just wanted to include this next picture as I am still reminiscing on the warm weather last week.. plus I like this outfit and it’s always a nice change to see the positives in yourself once in awhile :)

7) On Sunday I am going to my dad’s house to help out with some yard work stuff, alongside my step brothers, and will have the opportunity to use a chainsaw. Is it weird I am incredibly psyched for this? Lumberjack Tessa comin at ya!

This movie scared the begeezes out of me.

So there you are, a pretty random post to say the least but that’s alright, it was great to get things out and share them with you! Next week I plan to talk more about how the resting situation is going… and the food aspect of this as well (lots to say on that one) and whatever else I feel the need to discuss!

-What are your thoughts on the Pinterest screening/ban on Thinspiration stuff? Is it necessary and do you think it will be helpful? Do you think it will be hard to define what qualifies as thinspiration verses not?

-What are you reading right now? Any good book recommendations!? I need some new material!

-Are you “involved” in any TV series right now or waiting for one to come out? Any Game of Thrones fan out there?

-Do you have any favorite dishes that you have “healthified” like the blueberry crumb cake?

-What are your plans for the weekend? Do they involve heavy-duty machinery like mine? hehe ;)

How did you enjoy the egg-white oatmeal?? It’s the only way I can eat it anymore- too delicious! Love the look/sound of that blueberry cake- even better that it’s healthified :)! Love that Willy Wonka picture- I swear I hear something along those lines every Monday morning! Not too many plans as yet for the weekend but tonight involves a food tasting at a friend’s restaurant which should hopefully be opening to the public within the next couple of weeks! That book sounds SO good!!! I’ve been reading “the fault in our stars” by john green. It’s fantastic, you’d absolutely LOVE it! Once I finish it, I’ll definitely have to pick up this one :) And hot dang woman these recipes are makin me drool!

Hey Tessa,
I’m seriously considering taking a substantial break from intense exercise after reading your thoughts. Just wanted to let you know that you are an inspiration for me to keep pushing in my recovery. Wow, I actually feel like crying from relief right now because the whole exercise thing is such a huge step for me. Please keep me updated at how you’re doing with this, it helps more than you’ll ever know :)

Oh and PS. please please do not feel obligated to only share the good parts of your recovery and break from exercise in an effort to seem like a “good” blogger or whatever, the slips are what make you human and I appreciate them as much as the positive thoughts you have :)

Hi Catherine,
Well goodness thank you for telling me this, your words are truly touching! I now strongly encourage you to take a break! Do it for yourself of course, and knowing you are out there taking a rest with me will keep me encouraged and going as well. I mean that :) I am always “real” haha, so good and bad parts will always be revealed. But it is nice to know it is “okay” to do so, I do get nervous about people’s reactions sometimes even though I know I should not care

Wait waittt! I hope you didn’t take that as a criticism of you not being “real”… I know you are “real” with everything you say! Which is a major reason I am 100% behind your blog :) I just meant (that personally) my perfectionist attitude would make me anxious when writing a post about a slip or mistake I had, but in your case it is part of the recovery process and encourages me to know that it’s not a flawless journey :)

I’m so glad you enjoyed yoga!! I found that it even got better the more I went, since I knew most of the poses, and can use the time as ‘me’ time to think and just sort some things in my head – much like I would during a run. If you think you can, maybe try give yourself as long as it *feels* right – don’t try to get back to workout because time says so. Body does know best! Also, I wouldn’t forget to ease back into it – you may be rested but you still will have taken the time off of working out, so you don’t want to burn out right after that amazing rest period. (feel free to disregard unsolicited advice, just thought I’d share a little bit I’ve learned from doing these things)
Ooh i’m definitely going to check that book out! Next on my list of ‘to buy’ for the kindle :-) Also this weekend? going on a 2 night boat cruise to Riga, Latvia. so psyched! though heavy machinery sounds pretty damn awesome.

Great job on the exercise front, Tessa!! I will be reading that Divergent over spring break (which I’m FINALLY just starting today!), it sounds super good :)

This weekend I’m just relaxing with the family. Next week during break I have a lot of fun stuff: Chicago with my boyfriend, getting my first road [racing] bike so I can get into triathlons this summer, and a Brewers game next Saturday. Have a great weekend!

It is ironic that you posted about the thinspiration on pinterest because this week I have been feeling pretty low about myself and took to pinterest for some motivational/uplifting quotes and found myself looking at the thinspirational things and feeling worse about myself, I really hate that it gets to me! YAY! i’m so happy for you… I promise when you do start to workout again it’s going to feel awesome. GIving your body a break is hard to do mentally but you will feel like awesome sauce (yes I used that) when you get back into the groove of things.

Aww, yay for learning to enjoy yoga! You should really look into some hot/power studios – they’re great at challenging your practice a little more, and you will get a BIG OL sweat going (not to mention a great heart rate boost!) Sounds like that would be more up your alley than a relaxing one!

I have done hot yoga twice and despised my life during it..however, that was back when yoga was the bane of my existence so I should give it a go again!

On #1, I’m impressed that you’ve been able to enjoy yoga. I’m like the old you – that stuff drives me crazy. Can’t stand it.

Also on #1, I had a gap in my training plan around New Year’s and was telling my boyfriend tales of woe about how I did not know what to do. His sarcastic reply was “Yes, surely if you take one rest day tomorrow, you will get so out of shape that you will never be able to swim, bike, or run again.” Ok, fine, go ahead and have some reasonable perspective.

I just got caught up on all of your posts. I have SO much to say, but won’t b/c I’ll be typing for an hour! HA! Excercise additction=ME! It’s ridiculous and EVERY w/out MUST be hardcore w/ a “set” cal burn. Did I mention that a minimum of 2 workouts a day are occuring?? I have missed work, social events, a funeral for exercise. Ummm how about I just realilzed that I have not had a day off exercise and counting calories in over a year—that was two days LAST March when I had the stomach flu. Ok, I will stop.
Congrats to YOU on day 4. How the heck are you doing it?! OMG I commend you. Keep listening to your body!!!!
My weekend plans….teaching 8 aerobic classes, doing my “extra w/outs”, and continue training w/ my Tough Mudder group. YIKES! I really wouldn’t change it, though.

Interesting that you mention pinterest, I havent had the chance to read that article but I’m having to unfollow some people because I find all the images promoting hard core workouts just aren’t good for me right now. I’m trying to pin a lot of curvy girls instead of the ripped ones! Hope you have a great weekend :-)

yay for giving yoga another chance and loving it! you sound just like me with your experience with yoga. :) i’m so glad your no high intensity exercise plan is going well! i’m on day 6, and i’ve enjoyed it for the most part. i’ve had my “i feel fat” moments, but i’ve gotten over it. i know it’s good for me, and i’ve kind of been enjoying the down time and low key workouts. we got this girl! email me if you ever need some encouragement and/or support!

So much going on in this post I love! That Spongebob clip had me DYING..seriously I laughed so hard.

Hooray for STILL moving forward on the break from working out. Sometimes I feel the same way like yoga. I LOVE yoga don’t get my wrong..but whenever I put my mind to rest and really enjoy the strech, slow moving and mental workout I get it’s amazing.

That black dress and jean jacket outfit..ADORABLE. I am whoa jazzed to rock similar styles this summer! YAAY!

I really love yoga, especially when I get the chance to do it outside because I feel more relaxed and centered. I really want to try a yoga class though, especially hot yoga because I’ve heard how amazing it is.

Love the jean jacket! I have a cropped one that I got for my birthday last year but I haven’t worn it in quite a while–you’ve totally inspired me to wear mine soon!

I think I’m gonna try that egg white oatmeal or either the pumpkin one. I’m with you on blueberries too, they are amazing in oatmeal and anything else, really :).

I “healthify” most of what I bake with using Greek yogurt instead of oil and things like that. It helps take away fat but also adds protein and calcium which is a pretty good thing for us ladies :).

I’m glad your break from working out is going well. Even just a week, you could see that you won’t die if you don’t work out or gain a ton of weight. I remember I went on a cruise and figured I would gain alot… well when I came back the scale had moved ONE POUND and all my clothes fit like they used to. I think we just worry too much!

Haha, I used to hate yoga too for the exact same reason. I think it is pretty challenging, though, just in a different way! I have a pretty weak core so those parts are always really hard for me, but I’m ridiculously flexible so the flexible bits are easy…
Blueberry and lemon is such an awesome combination. Tempted to try that cake!!
Oh, and my show addiction is pretty embarrassing, but I am REALLY, REALLY addicted to Dance Moms… it is soooo trashy but I can’t stop watching hahahaha…

OMG. BLUEBERRY COFFEE CAKE?!?!? Coffee cake is my favorite!! I was also alllll about the Entennman’s when I was a kid, my dad used to buy it on Sundays for us as a special breakfast treat. I loved the cheese-filled kind too haha.

So glad you tried yoga again too! I’m kind of the same way…it’s “not enough of a workout”. Okay, I’ll admit, I still do not “count” it as a workout. But that doesn’t mean it’s not important! One of the things I’m learning is that the “workout” part is only like 1/3 of your training – the rest is stretching, strenght, and…well, rest haha. I’ve been doing more yoga this year (okay like…once every two weeks irregularly haha but still), and it really helps keep me loose, forces me to work on my balance and core strenght, AND forces me to chill the eff out for a bit haha. I don’t exactly look forward to it buttt it’s good for me lol :-P

And I gotta say I’m kinda torn on the pinterest issue!! Other people’s bodies are HUGELY motivating, toward many ends. I defintiely have a wall filled with pictures of my favorite distance runners, female cyclists, and triathletes, and it’s definitely my motivation – not like “I must have Kara Goucher’s body” but, “I want to be at that level some day so I am going to work”. It motivates overweight women to change their lives and get in shape, and I’m all for that. BUT on the other hand, such images can obviously drive girls into some pretty bad habits and teach them that their own body isnt good enough. SO….fitness/athletic inspiration is a great thing. “thin-spiration” is not. There SHOULD be a significant difference between the two, but I think many girls don’t know it and/or they cross the line…and that’s where the problem is.

Good point with the breaking up of the training schedule, I like how this sounds! It’s all about balance after all… and i need to improve on that in so many different areas of my life
I understand what you are saying about pinterest and I totes appreciate your opinion! Exactly, crossing the line is when it becomes an issue but who defines that line?

I have to say this exercise break you are taking makes me find you an EVEN MORE admirable , strong young woman!

I Soooo wish I had taken a break about 11 weeks ago:/! I struggle with overtraining in a major way- long story short, I ran / exercised through painful stress fractures in my legs, resulting in me snapping my tibia and being in crutches for 10 weeks. Umm , yeah, that was baaaaad.
Iv just got my crutches off and I’m allowed to start light exercising, but my leg probably will never be the same again, and I will always be fearful of pushing myself hard in exercise in case this happened again:(.

I just thought I’d share this with you because I TOTALLY think you are doing the right thing, and that you’ll reap so many benefits from this rest.

Its actually interesting how you say you don’t feel as bad as you thought you would- I too, thought I would go completely nutzo with no real exercise. But here I am 11 weeks of rest later , and I survived!(Duh), some people never exercise at all and are just fine, I haven’t actually noticed any changes in my body and I didn’t turn into a fat slob(hurrah!), which I was definitely scared of!

I’m so glad you enjoyed yoga! I used to be extremely bored when I first tried it too, but after a couple of times I got into it a little more. It’s quite relaxing nowadays. I love pumpkin oatmeal! I’ve gotta try it with blueberries. Oh and I didn’t know you were on Pinterest. Just followed you! :]

My husband and I just did a WHOLE lot of landscaping the last two days. It involved chainsaws, stump grinders and lots of top soil. I am so sore today.

I am really liking Alcatraz lately. I don’t watch too many TV series but I’ve enjoyed keeping up to speed on that one.

This weekend will be pretty lazy actually and I love it. If the weather is nice I might try and get out to run tomorrow but we’ll see. :-)

First off,I really admire your strength in terms of your not working out challenge! You’re inspiring me so much that I already mentioned on Alexandra’s blog that I might try to join in this challenge,too,during the next time… See,I know I actually need to as I am seriosuly overdoing myself a bit lately,I guess,and I can notice my health is suffering from it. :( On top of that,I cannot accomplish my goals (aka gaining weight and becoming stronger to become a nurse!) if I don’t! So hell,I should be more motivated,I guess.
Anyhow,yoga is absolutely wonderful and I am so glad you were able to enjoy the session on Thursday! :D I also used to think it was a “boring” thing,but now,I’ve become really passionate about it and there’s not a day goiing by without yoga anymore!

Glad to see your exercise break is going well for you! It’s always really….comforting (maybe not the right word, but I can’t find another one) when fears are disproven.
Pinterest banning thinspo..I think it’s a great idea in theory, but is it really possible? I actually don’t see a lot of thinspo on pinterest. But I do see it a lot on another social media site, Tumblr, who I know is also trying to squash the self harm blogs. I think those blogs are really triggering, and they seem to give off the air that it’s okay, even desirable, to lose weight and be very underweight. I can’t tell you how many pictures I’ve seen of malnourished, starving bodies with comments under them like “MUST look like this by summer!” and “I wish I could be like her”
These things will never disappear though, try as we might. I know Tumblr suggested that, instead of people being sent to a pro-ana blog, the link-clicker is sent to the NEDA’s website, which I think is a wonderful idea.

Sorry for the rambling, it’s just something kind of close to me, because I have friends who have secret identities on these “Weight loss” blogs, and it makes me so sad.

I am not sure if its possible either, but I am glad it is at least being addressed. Tumblr blogs are full of them, and pins from there get onto Pinterest and hence the problem. There are plenty of encouraging images, but yeah, some of them not so much and are quite triggering! Don’t apologize for the ramble, I appreciate your thoughts here!

Great job Tessa! I’m so glad you’re doing well and not going absolutely insane. It must be such a weight lifted off your shoulder to know you’ll be okay if you don’t work out. :) I love these recipes! I made egg white oatmeal once and it was sooo good, but for some reason I haven’t since then.. Weird? Yes. I made healthified cheesecake once and it was SO GOOD. And didn’t make my lactose intolerance go crazy, cause I made it with greek yogurt. :) And there was protein! So it was healthy and I could eat the WHOLE. THING. By myself. Seriously, lol. I hope you have an awesome weekend!

Gosh, I’m so happy they are going to get rid of those “thin-spo” pins. So many young girls use the site and they don’t need to have more media propaganda planted in their heads. Also, re: books… I just read ‘Unbroken’. It’s nonfiction, so it isn’t full of vivid dialogue, but the story is absolutely INCREDIBLE–it’s about Louis Zamperini (famous miler, as you probably know) and his experiences during WW II.

That book got me through a couple rough days of post-surgical recovery!
